Principal's Message - Brendon Napier

Dear Families,

I write to you today disappointed.

Over the past 18 months, I have dealt with an alarming number of incidents involving racially offensive language used by students at our school. While these incidents are not constant, any instance of racial slurs, no matter how infrequent is utterly unacceptable. Just last week, I had to make the painful call to a parent for the second time this year to inform them that their son had been targeted with a racial slur, simply because of the colour of his skin. In that same week, two students were suspended for similar behaviour.

This must stop!

At OLHOC, we have our four values of Respect, Love, Mercy, and Community. These are not just words on a wall or themes for assemblies; they are the foundation of who we are and how we treat one another. When students use language that degrades, dehumanises, or discriminates, they violate not only our school rules but the very spirit of who we are as a community.

I am imploring every parent and caregiver to have a serious, honest conversation with your child about the impact of their words. Most of you, when informed, are deeply shocked and saddened to learn your child has said something hurtful. That response matters. But I also ask, please do not make excuses for their actions. We cannot grow, heal, or change unless we first acknowledge the harm that has been done.

Racism, in any form, has no place at OLHOC. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that every student feels safe, valued, and respected. I need your partnership in this. Talk with your children. Help them understand the weight of their words. Remind them that kindness is not optional, it is expected.

No matter how long a student is with us whether for one year or their entire schooling, I want them to carry a piece of OLHOC with them wherever they go. I want them to be proud, when they see our colours or our logo in the future, I want them to remember a place where they were accepted for who they were and inspired.

As always, I look forward to seeing you around the school whether it’s at the Mestrez Street gate or the Balaclava Road entrance. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or just want to chat.

Respect, Love, Mercy and Community

God Bless
