Beginning of Year Mass - Friday 14th February – 9am in the Church
At our Beginning of Year Mass on Friday 14th February, we will have the commissioning and blessing of staff, students and parents as well as the presentation of the Year 6 leaders’ shirts and badges for those with additional responsibility. All parents and carers are very welcome and encouraged to join us. At our liturgical celebrations, participating in the singing and responses is the way that we can engage and respect the spiritual encounter of those present. We need to be mindful that the Church is a sacred place for prayer and worship for Catholics and refraining from talking and drinking coffees is most appropriate in this context. We appreciate your support with these small but important acts of respect. Congratulations to our Year 6 students who are already stepping up and showing their amazing leadership capacity!

For Catholic schools, Prayer and Worship provide an opportunity for students, staff and parents to celebrate their life and identity as members of the Church. Prayer and worship help create a sense of purpose and identity and draw the school community into an understanding of our shared humanity, links us with the Church throughout the world, and invites us to share the Good News. (BCE Religious Education Curriculum)
At Our Lady Help of Christians school, prayer and worship are central to who we are as a Catholic school community. Prayer and Worship provide us with an opportunity to connect with God, reflect on our values, and strengthen our sense of belonging. While many of our students and families come from diverse religious traditions, our shared commitment to faith, respect, and community allows us to journey together in a spirit of openness and understanding.
Prayer is more than just words—it is a moment of stillness, gratitude, and guidance or discernment. Whether through morning prayers, liturgical celebrations, or quiet reflection, these practices help us centre our hearts on what is important. Worship, in turn, brings us together as a faith-filled community, reminding us that we are part of something greater than ourselves.
For those who are Catholic, these moments deepen our relationship with God. For those from different faith backgrounds, they provide an opportunity to experience the values of love, peace, and compassion that are at the heart of our mission. The Catholic tradition teaches us to respect and embrace the diversity of our community, and we welcome all to participate in ways that are meaningful for them.
As we continue our school year, let’s remember that prayer and worship are not just rituals but vital parts of our identity. They nurture our spirit, strengthen our community, and guide us in living out Gospel values including respect, love, mercy and service to others.
Our school strives to always be a place where faith and learning flourish, and where every student feels included and supported on his/her journey.
I look forward to seeing our community come together for the Parent Information Evenings and Our Beginning of Year Liturgy this week.
Many blessings,
Toni

News from the APA - Karina Brady

Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope this message finds you well as we settle into the new school year. I would like to take this opportunity to share some important updates and reminders with you.
Our Lady Help of Christians Parent Information Night
This week, we are excited to invite you to the Our Lady Help of Christians Parent Information Night. On Wednesday 12th February from 5-7pm, this wonderful event will be an opportunity to come together as a community, meet your child/ren’s teacher and learn about the routines and expectations within their class. Your involvement and understanding of your child's educational environment are crucial for their success, and we look forward to seeing as many parents and carers there as possible. A friendly reminder unfortunately we are unable to provide care for the children at this event and ask for only parents or carers to attend.
NAPLAN
As we approach the NAPLAN testing period, I want to ensure that the community is well-informed of the schedule and the significance of these assessments.
“The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is a nationwide measure through which parents/carers, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.
NAPLAN results allow parents/carers and educators to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time – individually, as part of their school community, and against national standards.” (National Assessment Program website, 2025)
The NAPLAN testing period will occur from Wednesday March 12th – Monday March 24th.
Please refer to the image below for the Our Lady Help of Christian NAPLAN schedule.
A PDF version of the schedule can be found here.
If you would like further information about NAPLAN, please find attached an information brochure for parents and carers from the National Assessment Program website.
NAPLAN Parent Information Session – Year 3 & 5 Parents/Carers
We will be hosting a NAPLAN Parent Information Session on Wednesday 26th February at 5:30pm for Year 3 and Year 5 parents and carers. The session will run for approximately 30 minutes, and we will provide further insight into what NAPLAN is, what it will look like at Our Lady Help of Christians and how we talk to and prepare the students for NAPLAN.
Year 3 and Year 5 families, please keep an eye out for an EdSmart slip that will be coming out this week. We kindly ask that you RSVP so we can prepare the correct number of handouts and take home materials.
Stop, Drop and Go Safety
We have observed some safety concerns at the Stop, Drop, and Go area on Mestrez Street. After school, some families have been allowing children to walk across Mestrez Street to their cars on their own, through the flow of traffic. For the safety of all children and drivers, we remind you to either wait your turn and pull up at the Stop, Drop, and Go lane or park and walk in to collect your child/ren. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Finally, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all parents and carers for your support in transitioning back to school. Your involvement and commitment to your child/ren's education are invaluable, and we look forward to a successful and productive year ahead.

Library Lovers Month
Our first reading challenge of the year has started. Students were given a challenge bookmark with a list of books to be read. Once students have finished all the books from the list, the bookmark can be returned to the library for display.
Students have until Friday, February 28th (Week 5) to complete the challenge.
Library is open EVERY morning
The library is open every morning from 7.45am so we encourage our parents and carers to take the time to come in and read a book or simply chill out with their child/ren before the school day begins. Chess Club is another activity you can attend in the library with your child. Please see Mrs William’s newsletter section for more details.
We look forward to seeing you enjoy some time with your child/ren before the hectic school day starts!
Happy reading, everyone!

Enrichment Writing
Year 3 learnt how to begin a narrative with a “sizzling start” last week. Here are some of their responses to a picture stimulus of a magic house:
Growl…
“Who’s there?” said Sunny, looking as if she saw a ghost. She wandered around the most magical house in the street.
By Olivia Lee
“Help! I’m lost!” Jack screamed. “Anyone?” The poor boy thought no one would ever find him, when suddenly he came to a town.
“It looks abandoned, but why?” Jack asked himself. He knocked on one of the doors and it suddenly opened.
By Stella Townson
“Hey Luke!” said the bully.
“Yes?” said Luke as he anxiously turned around.
“I double dare you to go ding dong ditch that house,” said the bully.
“No, I’m okay,” said Luke
By Brooklyn Peeters
Strange sounds echoed when Gary stepped into the house.
“Follow me,” said Gary. “Nothing to be scared of.”
But when he finished talking, he saw red glowing eyes in the dark. Chomp! The beast ate Gary and now it is coming right for you!

The MyCE app will now be our main way of communicating with parents. If you have more than one student attending at different catholic schools, you will be able to see all of them on the one app, instead of accessing the different school portals.
Things that will be able to be seen/accessed on MyCE:
- School Reports
- Edsmart slips
- Advising of absences
- Access to newsletters
- School Calender, etc
If you require any assistance with the MyCE App, please contact the office.
Our Lady Help Of Christians School Cross Country Event
Our School Cross Country event will be held on March 21st, with a back up day of March 28th incase of bad weather.
If there are any parents or carers keen to volunteer for this event that would be awesome! These events always need some extra support to help them run smoothly.
If you are interested in helping, please let the office or Mr Henson know you are keen. The event will run from 8:30am – 11:45am. The different jobs we need volunteers for are below:
- Standing at points around the track
- Handing out place cards on finish line
- Handing out ribbons
Any volunteers will need to complete the following training to be able to help. The link is below:

Trinity Coast Central Sports District (TCC)
Below is a calendar displaying the dates for TCC trials throughout the year. Please note that at times dates/venues of trials can change and at times we get information very late regarding the trial. When information arrives on each trial, I will then give the information out to the students that have signed up for that sporting trial. Parents/carers will then need to fill out a ‘Peninsula Permission Details Booklet’ and get it signed by the principal to take to the trial. The link for this form will be found on the trial information sheet.
The ages for which students can participate in the trials is displayed with the relevant sport. Students ages are taken from the last day of this year. For example, if your child is 11 years old on 31/12/2025 then they are in the 11-year-old age group.
These trials are not a come and try session, instead they are for students who are at an elite level and have a lot of experience at that chosen sport. The aim of these TCC trials is to gain selection for a peninsula team. Students who put their name down to trial need to have experience playing for a club in that sport. Each year the feedback from TCC officials was that at times schools were sending to many students and students not up to the skill level required. Therefore, if there is a sport with a lot of students keen to trial for then OLHOC will hold its own trial before selecting students to take part at the TCC trial. This will help the TCC official by not sending too many students and only sending students who have a high level of skill.
This year, Mr Henson will not be making announcements for students to meet him at morning tea and lunch time who are interested in trialling for the different TCC sports. It will be the student’s responsibility to look at the Trinity Coast Central Sport Calendar which will be located on the PE notice board in the hall and let Mr Henson know each term what sport they would like to trial for in that term. Mr Henson will then put their name down for that trial and give them the information form for that trial when the school receives it.

Government Funded Back to School Support - Saver Plus
Could you use an extra $500 for education costs? The Smith Family know that cost of living pressures are continuing to put extra stress on households, with families in particular feeling the effects.
What is Saver Plus?
Saver Plus is a program for people on lower incomes. It’s about bolstering their financial skills, so they can develop (and keep) good savings habits. Since 2003, Saver Plus has supported more than 62,000 people to start saving.
It’s helped overcome the barriers around education expenses. And it’s set them up for a brighter future.
What are the eligible savings goals?
Eligible savings goals are education related products or services that:
- Assist a primary or secondary school student’s education;
Attached are some flyers that provide more information on Saver Plus.
